The murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, Ahmaud Arbery, and many others have sparked a wave of anti-racist protests around the world. The CWRU Department of Philosophy stands in solidarity with our Black colleagues and fellow citizens across the United States. We condemn the system of racial oppression that leads to pervasive police brutality up to and including these extrajudicial murders. We affirm that Black Lives Matter and we affirm that peaceful protest is protected speech. Looking to our own university, we strive to build an academic community that welcomes, encourages, and disseminates the work of students and scholars of color. To achieve this goal, we recognize that we must continually reflect on the injustices faced by under-represented and marginalized people, and repair the institutional structures that place them at a disadvantage. We encourage our colleagues in philosophy, throughout academia, and more broadly across society to do the same.
